2014 Spectator Survey

On January 19th the Nadeshiko League's spectator survey for 2014 (なでしこリーグ スタジアム観戦者調査2014サマリーレポート) was published, with a correction made in a later release (March 6th).

The spectators at ten matches, one home match for each team, were approached. The surveys completed by those who were not supporters of the home side were discarded. All respondents were over twelve years of age.

The table below lists the ten matches, noting the home team, away team, the total attendance at the match, the number of those surveyed and the total number of surveys analysed.

Home Away Attendance Interviewees No. Analysed Vegalta Beleza 2860 291 266 Urawa JEF 1774 145 123 JEF Niigata 978 165 118 Beleza Urawa 2463 278 157 Niigata INAC 1209 194 153 Iga Beleza 580 148 123 Saitama INAC 1887 248 131 INAC JEF 2909 288 255 Belle Urawa 2348 283 262 Kibi Beleza 590 187 118

The total number surveyed was therefore 1,706.
The figures used here for the men's J-League come from the corresponding survey from 2014. However, the Nadeshiko League's survey uses figures from the J-League's 2013 season. In the tables and graphs below the 2014 figures have been used.

The figures for the J-League are as follows:
For the Male/Female ratio question: 15,079
The number of respondents for the "With whom did you watch the match?" question was 14,987.

Ratio of Male to Female Spectators at Nadeshiko League games

The proportion of female spectators is again disappointingly low at 28.3%, slightly down from 2013 and some way below the 2012 figure of 35.7% (1,321 respondents at five games).

In terms of women spectators, Okayama Yunogo Belle led the way as they did in 2013, with a figure of 41.7%, the only percentage higher than the J-League average.

The Male/Female ratios for those clubs which have both
J-League and Nadeshiko League teams

The proportion of female spectators at the home matches of teams associated with J-League teams is once again noticably poor, though Urawa Red Diamonds' figures have shown a slight improvement. The biggest drop by far is that of Albirex Niigata Ladies: from a figure of 28% in 2013, their percentage of female spectators dropped to 17.8%. JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies did best in this regard, jumping from 22.7% in 2013 to 29.9% in 2014. Tokyo Verdy/Nippon TV Beleza were again the only team with a higher percentage of female supporters at their women's games. As was mentioned last year, this is most probably due to Tokyo Verdy having a lower than average number of women supporters. Furthermore, over the years Beleza has largely become less identified with its parent club.

"With whom are you watching the match?"
- multiple responses were possible

The data for the table above is presented below:

As can be readily seen above, the proportion of people who watch Nadeshiko League games by themselves is more than twice that of J-League games.

At Iga, the number of people who watched the games in family groups dropped from 60% to 44.5%, with a corresponding increase from 30% to 37.8% of those who watch alone.

Kibi's figures for groups of friends and families both saw a good increase, while for INAC Kobe the numbers were reversed: they saw an increase in the number of spectators who went alone, from 29.5% to 42.7%. Their Family percentage dropped from 45.2% to 36.1%. Urawa saw the biggest increase in groups of friends, with a corresponding drop in the number attending by themselves (an increase of 10.3% in the former, a drop of 8.8% in the latter).

Factors in the composition of the support base

The location of each team naturally has a large influence on their supporters' demographic. For instance, in largely rural Okayama, Belle have the oldest supporters, with an average age of fifty-three. Belle's supporters are also the most likely to be unemployed (20.7%, league average 10.3%) and Kibi's supporters are also among the oldest (49.5 years of age, league average 47.6) and are the most likely to be married (74.3%, league average 60.7%). Belle (21.7%) and Kibi (24.3%) supporters are also those who have the least money for leisure activities.

These figures are largely reversed in Kanto. Urawa have the youngest supporters (43.8 years of age), followed by JEF United (45.4). Beleza and JEF United have the fewest unemployed supporters, and Beleza also have the most single supporters (52.7%) with Urawa second (50.4%). Urawa supporters have the most disposable income followed by those of Beleza.

Some teams have a far greater level of involvement with their local community than others, especially those in less developed areas.

62.5% of Belle's respondents said that they feel that the team makes a large contribution to Mimasaka City, with a further 32% feeling that they make some contribution. Kibi's figures are 50% and 40.2% respectively. Furthermore, 80.7% of Kibi's supporters said that they one reason were attending the game was because of this contribution to society. Vegalta Sendai were second with 78.3% and Belle were third with 74.6%. At the opposite end were Beleza with 35.1% and Urawa with 44.2%. The average was 63.2%.

In terms of the media and how supporters are informed about their team, local newspapers are still important for the smaller cities' teams - Vegalta Sendai (47.1%), Belle (46.3%), Niigata (44.2%) and Kibi (32.2%). The figures for the Kanto teams are much lower - 4.3% for JEF United, 4.7% for Saitama, 5% for Urawa and 8.3% for Beleza. Figures for local television coverage are similar to those for newspapers: 46% of Sendai supporters get information from local television, with figures of 32.8% for Belle, 25.2% for Niigata and 16.5% for Kibi. In Kanto, the percentages are 15% for Urawa, 12.2% for Beleza, 3.4% for JEF United and 2.3% for Saitama.

Sendai and Niigata are not particularly big cities, but they are the biggest in their geographic areas and have a more defined hometown feel to their teams; Urawa, Beleza, JEF United and Saitama are concentrated in a much smaller area in by far the most populous region of Japan. 94.2% of Niigata's supporters live in Niigata Prefecture, 90.7% of Sendai's supporters live within Miyagi. The Kanto teams have lower numbers: Saitama (78.1%). Urawa (62.4%), JEF United (73.2%), Beleza (57.6%). Iga have the lowest number with 55.9%.

Of the five J.League clubs, JEF United is the most active in trying to attract children to their games and to make them feel welcome. The players give the children presents, play janken with them, organise meet and greet sessions exclusively for the children and so on. This is reflected in the survey. The family groups surveyed at all ten matches were asked to indicate who among them wanted to attend the game most. The supporters of JEF United had the highest figure for children, at 31.4% (INAC Kobe were second with 23%, Saitama third with 19.6%). The four remaining J.League clubs were well behind - Vegalta 13.7%, Niigata 13.7%, Beleza 15.2% and Urawa 15.4%. Kibi were the lowest of all teams, with 5.4%. JEF United also had the highest percentage of supporters with children playing football themselves, at 52.8%, though there is no additional data to suggest whether this is a factor in their attending.

At a typhoon-delayed game, all of the children in attendance were invited
to join the JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies team on the field

Of the five J.League clubs, it is only the fans of Beleza who have little interest in their men's team (24.1%), and indeed more of them support other J.League teams (36.2%). Interest in men's football is lower for the non-J.League clubs.

For how many years have you supported this club?

Vegalta Sendai took over from TEPCO Mareeze before the start of the 2012 season, hence the large proportion of supporters in their third year. The other J.League teams have the most long-term supporters, especially Urawa. The figures for Kibi also reflect their recent entry into the league and promotion in 2012, and Saitama saw a large number of newcomers last year, which was likely also prompted by their promotion back to the top division in 2013.

Belle and INAC saw an large increase in 2011 and 2012 with international success the likely driver, though the number of new supporters has dwindled and INAC's home attendances in particular have dropped each season since 2012.

The league organisers announced in November 2014 that they expect attendance figures of at least 1,000 at every game in the top division in 2015, with an overall average of at least 2,000. It is hoped that this figure is at least 3,000 after 2016. The higest average attendance in the league was 2,796 in 2011, with very high attendances after the World Cup in Germany, though they fell dramatically towards the end of the season.

An average of 2,000 in 2015 is therefore possible, with the World Cup in Canada to come this summer, though it will likely depend on some very high attendances to pull the average up. An average of 3,000 in any season seems ambitious.

League Attendances in 2014

Nadeshiko League 2014 Attendances

The overall average attendance for the 132 Nadeshiko League games played in 2014 was 1,593. This represents a decrease of 15% from the 2013 figure of 1,865. The average attendances for the last number of years are as follows:

2014: 1,593
2013: 1,865
2012: 2,572
2011: 2,796 (before the Women's World Cup: 788; following Japan's victory: 3,800)
2010: 912
2009: 1,067
2008: 1,107
2007: 922
2006: 1,215
2005: 1,114

One large factor is that teams sometimes play home games in other parts of Japan, usually a significant distance from their home city. In 2014 there were eight such games, and their average attendance was 2,484. There were also eight such games in 2013, the average for those was 2,772. In some cases teams did not play at home per se, but the distance travelled was not significant and these games are ignored for the purposes of these statistics.

The average attendance for the first ninety games in the Regular Series was 1,597. For the forty-two games in the Exciting Series the average was 1,586.

Nadeshiko League Exciting Series Tenth Round

Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies  0 - 1  Albirex Niigata Ladies
(Attendance: 5,976)

Urawa's five-year wait for a third league title came to an end today, but not in the manner they would either have expected nor hoped for - a deflating loss to Niigata resulted in a very quiet atmosphere at the final whistle. Injury to Naomoto Hikaru meant Goto Michi moving into midfield with Otaki Nami making a rare start up front. Niigata were unchanged.

Urawa looked less confident than they usually do, and may have been slightly nervous, even if they knew they were almost certain to win the league regardless of the result. Niigata went about their business in the usual fashion, and with nineteen minutes remaining substitute Oishi Sayaka scored the winning goal to give them all three points and move them into third - their highest ever finish.

Urawa were buoyant by the time of the trophy presentation, though more work will be needed if they are to retain the title next year. Niigata's fourth consecutive win sees them enter the Empress' Cup in fine form, and a repeat of last year's final appearance is attainable.

Okayama Yunogo Belle  0 - 1  Nippon TV Beleza
(Attendance: 2,194)

Beleza naturally went into this game determined to win even if catching Urawa was never likely. Beleza named an unchanged side though Belle brought Kado Yuka back into their side along with Kitaura Miho. Like many others this season, this game was decided in favour of Beleza via a goal from Sakaguchi Mizuho, who scored thirteen this season. In the fifty-fifth minute some tidy build up play from Beleza ended with Sakaguchi heading in a fine cross from Shimizu Risa.

Belle had very few chances in the game and looked tired, which is not unexpected given the demands on their small squad, with little squad rotation or substitutions made during the season. Ultimately finishing fourth having won the Regular Series will be seen as a massive disappointment. Beleza finish second for the fourth successive season, and they will know that they had the potential in them to win the league had they not slipped up in earlier matches.

Okayama Yunogo Belle:
Fukumoto Miho (capt), Kado Yuka, Kitaura Miho, Mizushima Kumi, Takahashi Sachie, Kuzuma Riyo, Nakano Manami, Miyama Aya, Asano Miki, Arimachi Saori, Matsuoka Miki

Subs: Tanaka Mina (Shimada Chiaki, 77 mins), Muramatsu Tomoko (Sumida Rin, 90+2 mins)
Unused subs: Soyama Kanako, Doko Mayo, Kobayashi Yayoi
Scorers: Sakaguchi Mizuho (55 mins)

JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies  1 - 1  INAC Kobe Leonessa
(Attendance: 3,297)

JEF United and INAC Kobe finished fifth and sixth respectively after they drew their final match. Ikadai Risa gave the home side a third-minute lead with assistance from Fukusawa Risa who capitalised on defensive hesitancy and carelessness. Thirty minutes later INAC Kobe were level, this season's second-highest scorer Takase Megumi shooting powerfully into the top corner from outside the box.

The only other aspect of note was the sending off of Beverly Goebel-Yanez with eleven minutes remaining, with the American astonished at being dismissed. This season there was a total of six red cards shown.

JEF United will probably be slightly disappointed that they couldn't finish any higher than fifth, though they have had an erratic season. The management at INAC Kobe will be understandably aghast at how poorly they have done this year, and drastic signings may well be in order - the kind of signings that made them Japan's top team.

JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies:
Yamane Erina, Wakabayashi Minori, Sakuramoto Naoko (capt), Chino Shoko, Ueno Saki, Hosaka Nodoka, Setoguchi Kozue, Kawamura Mari, Fukasawa Risa, Ikadai Risa, Sugasawa Yuika

Unused subs: Nemoto Mio, Tsurumi Ayaka, Oya Madoka, Matsuura Nagisa, Yamamoto Naomi

Iga started this second leg of their play-off with Nittaidai with the same starting eleven from last week, though their opponents made four changes: Uemura and Goto were ruled out owing to injury, with Nozu and Ishii dropping to the bench.

Iga proved in last week's match - particularly in the second half - that they had the measure of Nittaidai, and again this week they were able to keep their dangerous forwards at bay. After a scoreless first half Matsunaga Yoshie put the home side a goal up. A through ball from Tsutsumi Saki found Mewis with just Inoue in goal to beat, and when her shot hit the post Matsunaga was on hand to finish off.

Nittaidai had needed two goals anyway, and still had hope, but with fifteen minutes Sugita Ami found Haji Madoka and her fourth goal in four games made the tie safe for the Kunoichi.

Nittaidai will now build primarily for the inter-collegiate championships which begin in a few weeks, though their most immediate challenge is the first round of the Empress' Cup, with the Japan Soccer College Ladies their opponents.

Iga have done what was necessary after a poor season, which was especially disappointing in view of their fourth-place finish in 2013. They enter the Empress' Cup in the second round, where they will face the winner of the tie between Shizuoka Sangyo University Iwata Bonita and JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies U-18.

Nadeshiko League Exciting Series Ninth Round

INAC Kobe Leonessa  0 - 0  Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies
(Attendance: 4,453)

With just two games remaining and a five-point gap back to Beleza, Urawa came to Kobe knowing that another win over their hosts would win them the title for the first time since 2009. Urawa made just one change, putting loanee goalkeeper Hirao Chika back between the posts. INAC Kobe made a few changes, moving Nakajima into defence, Masuya and Goebel-Yanez into midfield and starting with Nakada up front.

Three successive corners for Urawa provided the first chances for them to go ahead, and although none came to anything, INAC's defence already looked unsure of itself. INAC moved menacingly upfield and Hirao had to be quick to react to Masuya's shot after she failed to gather a Nakada cross cleanly.

In the fifteenth minute INAC broke again after sustained Urawa pressure, and Wada had to be alert to clear away for another corner, which ultimately led to another corner kick, though again Urawa marked up well and Masuya could only poke wide.

Urawa continued to shoot whenever the opportunity presented itself, though Kaihori was rarely troubled, though they were playing the better football and were creating openings from more angles than INAC Kobe, who again looked to attack in a more direct fashion.

Miscontrol from Wada led to another INAC corner kick which came to nothing. Naomoto Hikaru was substituted at this point, having suffered an injury, with young Nagano Fuka coming on to replace her in only her second league appearance.

Dozono went down following a hard challenge in the thirty-fourth minute, prompting some concern but she was fine after some stretching, and INAC's tough challenges continued as the half progressed. In the forty-third minute Urawa won another corner but again this came to nothing, and the outstanding feature of the first half was the lack of danger created from set pieces.

At half-time the teams were level, just as they were in the other two games, which meant that were the scores to stay the same Urawa would win the league. Neither side made a change at half-time.

The first ten minutes after the restart were largely incident free, until Masuya wriggled clear to get a shot on goal, which was palmed away by former JFA Academy schoolmate Hirao Chika for another INAC Kobe corner kick which came to nothing.

Takase shot into the side netting on sixty-three minutes, and at the other end Kira blasted over following good work between herself and Kato on the left. After sixty-seven minutes Masuya came off, and was replaced by Tanaka Yoko.

Kira came off to be replaced by Seike Kiko in the seventy-third minute, who made an immediate impact in her first appearance here at the start of the season. In the eightieth minute she had a tremendous chance to score but her shot was just tipped wide by Kaihori, though a corner wasn't given. At this point Chelsea Stewart came on for Nakada Ayu for INAC Kobe.

Seike and Goto in particular continued to cause trouble for INAC, though there was the feeling that they would be happy with a draw as time started to run out. Saito Akane came on for Kato Chika with a minute to go further suggesting that the visitors were happy to see the game out.

INAC Kobe too looked in little hurry to go for all-out attack and the game ended scoreless. Urawa thus lead Beleza by three points with just their home game against Niigata to come. Beleza are eight goals behind in terms of goal difference and it would be astonishing if they could not only make up the three points but also the goal difference.
Beleza travel west to Okayama to play the demoralised Belle, with the final game between the bottom two in Chiba.

Nippon TV Beleza  1 - 0  JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies
(Attendance: 796)

Beleza have at times this season had trouble scoring when on top, and again today they had to wait until the seventy-second minute for the winning goal against JEF United, Sumida Rin the scorer. Sumida played in a free kick which wasn't an attempt at goal but with everyone including JEF United's goalkeeper Yamane missing it, the ball found its way in to the far corner.

Beleza will ultimately be disappointed by this result. Their only chance now of winning the league is to not only beat Belle next weekend but also to hope that Niigata beat Urawa. While this scenario would not be particularly surprising, Urawa's eight goal lead over Beleza in goal difference is very unlikely to be challenged.

All three games next weekend kick off at 1 pm. Beleza are already guaranteed to finish second and are unlikely to win. JEF United stand fifth at the moment and a draw is all they need against INAC Kobe to remain in that position.

Nippon TV Beleza:
Yamashita Ayaka, Shimizu Risa, Iwashimizu Azusa (capt), Kinoshita Shiori, Ariyoshi Saori, Hara Natsuko, Sakaguchi Mizuho, Sumida Rin, Momiki Yuka, Hasegawa Yui, Shimada Chiaki

Albirex Niigata Ladies  5 - 1  Okayama Yunogo Belle
(Attendance: 1,054)

For the first time this season, Okayama Yunogo Belle made significant changes to their starting lineup, with Taniguchi Kikumi, Nakada Maiko and Kawano Saki coming into the side, with only Kawano having previously started. Niigata started with a much more familiar eleven, and today they continued their recent good form to win their third game in a row, having previously failed to win any of the Exciting Series games.

Matsuoka Miki has had a good season again this year, and she put the visitors 1-0 up after just nine minutes, with Niigata not equalising until just before half-time, Kamionobe Megumi scoring just her first of the Exciting Series to add to her five from the Regular Series.

In the second half of this game, just as against Urawa, Belle created little in front of goal and Niigata simply dominated. They took the lead through McCarty twelve minutes in, with Kojima Miku adding her first in the Nadeshiko League seven minutes later. Substitute Yamazaki Marumi scored twice in the last ten minutes to inflict upon Belle their worst defeat of the season.

Niigata are now assured of a best-ever fourth place finish. Belle will have to settle for at best third, and could still be overtaken by Niigata if they win next weekend and Belle lose.

Nadeshiko League Promotion/Relegation Playoff First Leg

Nittaidai Football Club Ladies  1 - 2  Iga FC Kunoichi
(Attendance: 322)

Goals in additional time at the end of either half gave Iga an away victory and all of the impetus they will feel they need to get a similar result in the second leg to keep them in the top division. The first half was an even contest, with Nittaidai looking to beat Iga's offside trap - though largely failing - while Iga's on-loan American Kristie Mewis wasn't shy about taking every chance she got to shoot at goal.

Nittaidai looked good for a lead at half-time after Uemura Shoko had put them ahead with a fine goal in the forty-third minute, but the students' defence lacked alertness in additional time, allowing Haji Madoka to score from a strike down the right, with Mewis assisting.

In the second half Iga asserted their superiority on the game and created far more chances, though Nittaidai were always dangerous on the counter-attack, particularly down the left wing. Just when it seemed that the game would end in a 1-1 draw, Mewis took a speculative shot from the right which caught Inoue Nene off her line, and with just seconds remaining the Iga players and supporters were understandably ecstatic.

Iga are likely to receive another boost with the return of Rachel Van Hollebeke in defence, and with her ability and experience the Kunoichi will feel their one-goal lead and two-away-goal advantage enough of a platform to see them survive.

Nadeshiko League Exciting Series Eighth Round

Okayama Yunogo Belle  0 - 2  Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies
(Attendance: 1,828)

A decisive victory for the league leaders, and a defeat for Belle that almost certainly ends their title hopes for another season. In the first half the teams were quite even but Belle fell behind to a powerful header from Goto Michi on thirty-three minutes, with Kira and Kato combining well down the left wing, with the latter putting in a perfect cross for Goto.

Belle were restricted in the second half and after seventy-six minutes an own goal off a corner kick for Urawa sealed the victory and a very precious three points for the visitors.

INAC Kobe are Urawa's next rivals, beat them and the Saitama side are champions for the third time. Belle travel to Niigata with just the slimmest chance of a first league title.

Nippon TV Beleza  2 - 1  INAC Kobe Leonessa
(Attendance: 1,730)

Beleza took all three points to keep their hopes of a thirteenth championship alive, though they had to come from behind against an INAC Kobe side which was again very disappointing.

The sides were level at half-time, despite Beleza creating far more opportunities to score than the champions did, and in the sixty-fourth minute they went ahead through Kyokawa Mai, who scored her sixth of the season. Iwashimizu was too easily beaten by the young forward who shot early over goalkeeper Yamashita Ayaka, who today made a rare starting appearance and will not be pleased with herself with regards to her positioning.

Beleza hit back almost immediately, and within seven minutes were in the lead. First Iwashimizu supplied Shimada with a long ball and she outpaced Isokane to finish smartly past Kaihori to equalise. Shimada was then instrumental in the second, taking a Hasegawa pass, holding the ball up well and then feeding Momiki who scored in a similar fashion past Kaihori.

INAC Kobe had little in reply and Beleza held on comfortably to win and keep the pressure up on Urawa at the top, though must keep winning and hope that their Kanto neighbours slip up, with next week's visit of JEF United next to come. INAC Kobe host Urawa and Beleza will be hoping that INAC can beat Urawa for the second time this season.

Albirex Niigata Ladies  1 - 0  JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies
(Attendance: 661)

Tiffany McCarty scored her first goal of the season as a highest-ever finish of fourth place now looks likely for Niigata. McCarty's goal came in the sixty-seventh minute is a game of few goal-scoring chances, with yet another assist for the in-form Obara Yuria, whose long pass was perfectly weighted for McCarty to run onto and score.

Niigata next play Belle, again at home and will be hoping to continue their good run of form. JEF United host Beleza who are still in the hunt for the title.

Nadeshiko League Exciting Series Seventh Round

Upper Section

Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies  2 - 1  JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies
(Attendance: 1,480)

On a very wet day in Saitama, Urawa again showed character in coming from behind to beat JEF United to boost their title hopes considerably. Sugasawa Yuika's twentieth goal of the season had given the visitors hope of an upset, as she punished Usui for sloppiness on the ball to race through on goal and beat Hirao with a fine shot into the roof of the net.

For the remainder of the game though, the visitors saw very few chances to score and they continued their pattern of conceding goals in the second half. First Kishikawa Natsuki equalised for Urawa from the spot for a handball offence, though JEF felt harshly done by as the ball had hit off the top of Sakuramoto's shoulder. Thirteen minutes later Urawa had the lead, Kato Chika scoring at the far post from a Kira cross, with neither Sakuramoto nor Wakabayashi Minori able to get close enough to cut the ball out.

Next up for Urawa is a significant challenge in the form of a visit to Okayama to take on their nearest rivals. A win would make them heavy favourites to win the league, a loss and once again the race is wide open. JEF United look to recover away to Niigata.

Nippon TV Beleza  1 - 2  Albirex Niigata Ladies
(Attendance: 960)

Niigata's first win of the Exciting Series dealt a critical blow to Beleza's hopes of a first league title since 2010, with just three games remaining.

The away side went ahead early in the game, Oishi Sayaka scoring in the sixth minute from Obara's long ball down the left, her third goal in what has been a quiet season this year. Shimada Chiaki equalised for Beleza seven minutes before half-time, with the Nittaidai graduate heading powerfully home from Hasegawa's cross.

On the balance of play Beleza will have felt they should have gone on to win the game, but it was Niigata who took all three points, with Yamazaki Marumi scoring on seventy-five minutes, fifteen minutes after replacing Oishi. It was another of Niigata's substitutes, Tiffany McCarty who did the damage though, taking a throw-in from Obara, turning well in the box and then crossing perfectly from the goal line to the waiting Yamazaki.

Beleza were unable to respond and are looking unlikely to be able to sufficiently recover to catch Urawa. They next meet INAC Kobe and a win is essential. Niigata host JEF United next week where a win is likely to give them a chance of ultimately finishing in at least the top four.

INAC Kobe Leonessa  1 - 1  Okayama Yunogo Belle
(Attendance: 3,709)

In poor weather conditions in Toyama, Okayama Yunogo Belle were hosted by INAC Kobe who cannot now retain the Nadeshiko League title. Belle are still very much in contention but needed to win this game to stay in touch with Urawa at the top. Their manager Terada Kaori was banned from this game, for arguing with the officials in Belle's previous match against JEF United.

INAC Kobe were extremely disappointing in their previous match, a no-score draw with Niigata, and it was expected that they would try to impress new manager Kumada Yoshinori, who recently left his post with the Myanmar women's side to take up this position. Nakajima Emi came back into the starting lineup after injury, and Michigami Ayaka made her first appearance this season after a significant time out, also due to injury.

Sawa Homare was one of the few players who showed any ambition against Niigata, and it was fitting that it was she who opened the scoring in the twelfth minute, left alone and heading in easily from Nakajima's ball into the box, with Belle appealing in vain for offside.

As the half wore on INAC continued to look the more dangerous side going forward, with Belle lacking in scoring opportunities, and with Miyama's deliveries from corner kicks uncharacteristically poor. However, she only needs one chance, and from distance she blasted home a free kick past Kaihori for the equaliser after twenty-seven minutes.

This goal gave Belle's attack more impetus, with Miyama's long cross-field balls stretching the INAC defence, which has looked poor all season. From another free kick in the thirty-fifth minute she shot just wide.

At the other end Kawasumi finally had a chance to shoot in the thirty-ninth minute but shot just wide of the right-hand post, and Fukumoto had to paw over a dangerous cross from Sawa moments later.

No changes were made at half-time. Belle had a chance from a corner kick and a few minutes later worked a good opening for Miyama but she shot over poorly. Belle continued to attack down the left through Nakano and down the right through Asano, with just half-chances the result, but they did look the more likely to take the lead.

INAC Kobe introduced Beverly Goebel-Yanez after sixty-two minutes, replacing Nakajima. Belle made a change of their own a minute later, the tall Fushiki coming on for Kuzuma, presumably to deal with Goebel-Yanez's height. Sawa had another chance from a header but it went just wide, though Belle will again have been concerned with how free she was left in the box.

The changes were coming rapidly, with INAC Kobe making the next, Michigami coming off to be replaced by Watanabe Ayaka. Takase had a shot knocked just wide as the game became more open, taking a pass from Kawasumi down the right, though two corners in succession came to nothing. Kawasumi herself had a shot from distance as she sought to catch Fukumoto off her line, though the Belle 'keeper was untroubled.

Fukumoto found herself in considerably more trouble after Kawasumi again released Takase for a rapsing shot which was just palmed over. Again the Belle defence was unable to stop Kawasumi's run or Takase's move into space.

With just under ten minutes remaining, a Miyama free kick into the ball was deflected with Nakano volleying just over from the loose ball. At this point INAC made their final change, a swap up front with Kyokawa coming off for Masuya. It was Takase who had the next good chance though, as she held off Takahashi to get off a shot with just went wide of the far post.

Arimachi had a rare chance to score at the other end, a burst of pace from Asano taking her clear of the INAC defence, though Arimachi knocked it wide of the near post.

The game ended 1-1, with the real winners being Urawa, who ended the weekend three points clear of Belle and five clear of Beleza. INAC Kobe have a chance to reorganise before the Cup starts, while Belle will do everything they can to beat Urawa next weekend in a game which could decide the title. INAC Kobe play Beleza.
