L.League 2002

Just as in 2001, the league gained another team for the 2002 season, bringing the total number to eleven. AS Elfen Sayama FC, hitherto called AS Elfen FC, became the second club from Saitama in the league. The first of those Saitama teams, Urawa Reinas, changed their name to Saitama Reinas.


The format remained largely the same as that used in 2001, though with one significant change. Each team played the opposition sides once, not twice, within their own division though with the same points format as in 2001. Following the first stage, the top two teams in each division would form a new Upper Section division, with the remaining seven teams forming the Lower Section. The teams in the Upper Section would play each other twice, those in the Lower Section just once.

NTV Beleza retained the title, again finishing just ahead of Tasaki Perule FC, with whom they drew on the final day to secure their seventh championship.
